USS FRED T. BERRY
DD/DDE 858 SHIP'S HISTORY ADDENDA BERRY ENCOUNTERS THE USS NAUTILUS |
From Glenn Petteys, BT3, (1954 & 1955) "When the BERRY was returning from her Mediterranean cruise in 1954 she picked up an unidentified sonar contact just west of the Straits of Gibraltar. The ship followed this contact for nearly ten days before it was lost. Upon return to the United States the ship docked at Quonset Point rather than Newport. Also docked at Quonset Point was the USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571) the first nuclear powered submarine. It was learned that the NAUTILUS had been the unidentified sonar contact and despite all of its maneuverings was unable to shake the BERRY for the ten days." |
